Generation Z and the Renewal of Humanism

The history of higher education has evolved through the centuries, building on developing theories, major historical events, and generational shifts. As Generation Z comes of age and begins their higher education journey, they arrive as true digital natives anchored by their traditional values. Their values harken back to the ideals of humanism, a philosophy that historically changed the development of higher education institutions. Both the values of Generation Z and the ideals of humanism are rooted in recognizing the value of realism, humans as individuals, and the collective of humanity. By drawing connections between the technologically adept Generation Z and traditional humanistic ideals, a new version of humanism emerges, and within the context of this new humanism, an exploration of what it means for the visual and experiential future of higher education can be considered.

The value of realism.

Interactions between humans delivers rich information and allows for meaningful collaboration. Generation Z senses the value of reality, having been born into a world where physical and digital sources are constantly mixed, and strives to use it to benefit their human experience.

Humans as individuals.

The technology of this age allows Generation Z to learn freely, teach themselves skills, and create businesses with these skills and thus share their unique creations with the world. Generation Z wants to celebrate individuals for who they are, what they have learned, and what they make.

The collective of humanity.

Generation Z wants to create a better future, and that is more important to them than just acquiring objects. They want to see the reality of the world, to relate, to connect, and be a part of humanity as a whole.
